Botanical Sketches in Pastel

These 9x12" pastels, based on botanical sketches created at ArtRadius Saksala, were made in 2010.

These botanical sketches were made in September, 2006 at ArtRadius Saksala, an international artist-in-residence program in Finland.

They were produced with Ink and pencils on 9 x 9" paper.

In this body of work I was looking for more simplicity, unexpected shapes, hard edges, limited palette, shapes carried forward to the next frame, with variations. My idea was to work quickly and abstractly, determined to think as little as possible, without regard for outcome! I have to conclude that paint wants to find figures, landscapes and meaning everywhere.

Yupo, the surface these are painted on, is an opaque synthetic film.

Off Road

OFF ROAD: A Traveler's Tale, Part I

The first states of these pieces were created in the late summer of 2011, by a combination of mono-print and painting. The following summer, 2012, saw them take shape as a series of stories set in the curious rugged landscapes supplied by the mono-prints. I think of these narrative pieces as "alternative fiction". My free expressionistic flow of thought uses popular culture and sculptural ideas to form snapshot views of events or states. And these various figures, who all star in their own stories, suggest to me themes and variations, like glimpses along a journey.

Sweet Northern Songs

This is a collection of pieces that I feel show the cultural influences of growing up in the American Midwest in a first generation Irish and Norwegian family. Several of the paintings were begun in the late sixties when I lived in Toronto. I kept a small studio in Markham Village, and was represented by Gallery Moos on Yorkville Avenue. When my husband and I left for UCLA, I took a roll of unfinished canvases with me, knowing that I'd complete them when life got back to normal. My husband's PhD, three children, and a long, interesting working life in environmental assessment allowed only sporadic attempts at painting, and I didn't really get my chance until the hot Texas summer of 2000. This collection includes those completed canvases, some contemporary work, and a few from the years between.
